Marathon is one of the OSS projects started by good folks at ThoughtWorks. The first release of Marathon 0.1 happened in July 2002 on SourceForge website. Over the next year regular releases happened and Marathon reached 0.13 by June 2003. Then the project was abandoned by the original development team.

During early 2004, Subex was looking around for an automation tool for in-house use. The ones that are commercially available are too pricey or (in at-least one case) the tool needs some enhancements and the provider quoted exorbitant amount for providing the updates. Finally the search ended with Marathon. Under the aegis of Subex, Marathon is revived. The first release 0.7 happened during June 2004 and since then regular releases happened till the end of 2004. Again, Marathon development went into a limbo.

It is time for giving a new thrust for Marathon to reach Version 1.0 and beyond. When Jalian Systems was formed, we decided to use Marathon as our first product. According to this decision Marathon 1.0 is released during October 2006. A new website is launched and a plan was also made to offer a commercial version of Marathon (currently christened Marathonite). Marathon is undergoing a massive rewriting exercise. A new version of Marathon is slated to be released during 2007 - that is delayed to 2008 now. The new version of Marathon will be based on eclipse platform.
